My Travel Essentials

I travel around the UK a lot! From Sheffield where I currently live and attend University, to my parents house back in Manchester, down to my boyfriends house in Essex. When moving around I am always paranoid about forgetting important items. I like to travel light as bulking bags and suitcases around are not my style! Along with the obvious, spare clothes etc. I much prefer a few essential items chucked into my handbag! My travel essentials consist of:

My Kindle
I use this for everything, from reading, to catching up on the news, to tweeting,  watching YouTube videos and Netflix!

Mini moisturiser
I'd be so lost without a decent moisturiser, but lugging bottles and bottles of moisture, face, body, and hands around would be a pain! So a decent all in one is definitely needed!

Underwear
I always make sure I have extra knickers in my bag, don't ask why haha!! I guess you never know...
But seriously black and white underwear is a must, nothing worse than the wrong colour underwear, ie: white knickers under a pair of black leggings, major no no!

Chargers etc.
Obviously nobody wants to be without their beloved phone, so I've purchased a spare charger and keep it in my travel bag, this way I don't have to remember the one I keep at my Sheffield home, I also always have a spare if it breaks or whatever!

My Travel Make up
I have so much make up, I just couldn't possibly take it with me everywhere I go, so unless I know I'll be going on a night out and need my full face on, I only take my bare essentials.

I love the MAC studio fix foundation, I sometimes mix it with a little moisturiser and use it as a BB cream.
Concealer is my go to, must have, swear by, product! Working nursing shifts, long days and nights, don't do anything for my eyes, and I'm often left with dark circles! So I rely on this provide me with a fresh, revitalised face!
This MAC bronzer come highlighter is perfect as its a combined product which means less make up needed!
My brow pencil is my life, a defined eye brow makes a face so without this Id be screwed!
And finally a mascara, the bold black lash from MAC elongates and blackens my lashes.

Bank Holiday Weeked

I've been so lucky to have been able to go home to my absolutely gorgeous family, and spend quality time with them this May BHW. From lazy mornings, fresh coffee, and cuddling my two cats which I miss dearly. I thought I'd update you on my weekend! So here it is...

One of my favorite things about home is my Mother, I love her to the moon (Obviously) and miss her like crazy whilst I'm away! So spending quality time cooking, relaxing and catching up on life with her is valuable to me.

Mine and my Mamma's Saturday night consisted of scented candles, a large glass of wine each, a Galaxy sharing bar, and a good ol' 80's sing song... Saturday treat night!

My two cats, Cueball and Mr. Jinx are my fur babies, and living away from home I don't get to cuddle and squeeze them as much as I'd like. So plenty of probably unwanted squeezes were given this weekend. Cueball is always moody with me when I return, he hates me leaving, but warms to me again after a few days then cries and cries when I leave.

Jinx is a nutter. He eats everything and anything in his path and rather hyperactive!

Yes, that is my cat in a brown paper Primark bag...

I was also lucky enough to catch my sister and spend some time with her this weekend, she's my absolute best friend and quite frankly my two year younger twinny. Before moving away from home we were two peas in a pod! So finding family time to spend with her is extra important!

Sunday daytime was spent being lazy, drinking fresh coffee and watching good old Sunday tele! A perfect Sunday if you ask me.

And then Sunday night my Dad took me and Mum out for Mexican food and cocktails! And oh did we take advantage. We had the lot...

Monday was a lovely day, the weather was gorgeous, so we headed out for a walk to a large nature reserve, not too far from where I live back in Manchester.

It was however extremely busy, as it was Bank Holiday Monday and the weather was half decent for once, so a little crowded but still a lovely day out.

And of course bank holiday wouldn't be bank holiday if we hadn't of stopped for Ice cream...

Assignment Tips

As you all know, I'm currently in my second year of my Adult Nursing Degree. This year is coming to an end, with only two more assignments and 12 weeks of placement left until the exciting, scary, horrible, nerve wracking, emotional, start to my final year of being a Student Nurse. Argh!

In my first year I struggled so much with the academic side of my degree, the placements were fine and I passed with flying colours, but the assignments however, well that was a different story. I mean, I didn't do terribly and eventually passed first year with a 2:1, but it took a hell of a lot of work and effort to do so. The change from school and college work, to the big wide scary world of university assignments was just far too much for my brain to handle. I found it difficult to write to a high academic standard, and was told time after time again from tutors that I would need to improve my writing in order to achieve what I have always wished for.. A 1st class honors degree. I was determined to do better in my 2nd and final year and therefore pushed myself harder than ever, read countless books and posts online about assignment writing, attended support sessions to further my knowledge and turned to family and friends to help me with my grammar and punctuation.

It paid off. It really did help, and so I thought I would share with everyone my top 10 tips of assignment writing, what I found to be most useful, and what has helped me along my journey through second year into third.

Tip #1
Find your ideal place to study.
I work best at the library, but I have friends who need to be at home to write. Others enjoy working in busy environments like at the park, or even in Starbucks! Experiment and decide what's best for you, if your like me and need silence to work, somewhere like the library where there's no distractions and you will stay focus may be better! My university library offers rooms such as silent study where all mobiles must be switched off and there's no chatting allowed, but it also offers group study, which are rooms designed to work alongside friends, where you can speak and help each other out.

Tip #2
Have a plan.
Having a plan gives you somewhere to start, without one I find I can be sat at my desk staring at the laptop screen for hours without a single word on the page. I like lists, so my plans often come in the form of one. Every idea I have I write it in a list, using headings to separate and collect my ideas into categories or groups, which then turn into sentences and paragraphs. Spider diagrams can also work well as a plan, with a main idea in the center and then sub-ideas coming off from it. Jot down everything that comes to your head, whether you use it or not later, it doesn't matter. Make sure when constructing a plan you stick to your assignment brief and always look to your marking criteria if you have access to one. I like to have an idea of the topics I need to research and write about, which brings me onto to my next tip.

Tip #3
Research. Research. Research.
Always do your research, collect as many books and journal articles and sieve through them to find the most relevant and important quotes and information. Make sure you stick post it notes with memo's on the pages that are most useful, this way you can quickly flick to the information you need, rather than sitting through and reading the information over and over again. Make sure you use the most efficient sources to find your research. Journal databases specific to your topic or area are a good place to start, always ensure research is up to date to allow you to gather the most recent and relevant data.

Tip #4
Be prepared.
Mentally and Physically prepare yourself to be working what probably seems like endless hours on your assignment. I always make sure I have plenty to drink when I go to study, I always take a large bottle of water and a coffee in my flask. This also stops me from spending a fortune at the library on University, overly priced, drinks. I also make sure I take plenty of snacks, I mostly take fruit, but you will also often find me munching on sweets and chocolate whist doing my assignments, which isn't the best of things but hey, studying is hard work and its always nice to treat yourself on junk food now and again! Also be prepared to have to turn down plans, it's the hardest thing ever when I have arranged a day at the library and I get  a text from a friend that morning asking to go shopping instead, but hold your ground and say no! Assignments have deadlines whereas you can shop to your hearts content once you have submitted your essay!

Tip #5
Get up early.
You all know the saying, the early bird gets the worm! Well I find the earlier I get up the more productive my day is. When I'm up, showered, into my comfys, and eating breakfast before 9am, I feel like I can conquer the world! Whereas when I'm getting up midday, feeling sluggish and grumpy I never want to work on my assignment. Therefore tip number 5 would be to set that alarm for nice and early, work on your assignment all morning and have the afternoon off. You'll feel like you have done mountains of work when usually your only just rolling out of bed.

Tip #6
Take Breaks.
Schedule breaks into your working hours, I usually like to work for an hour then have a 10-15 minute break where I'll make myself a cup of tea, or some lunch. I'd recommend spending your breaks away from laptop's, T.V's, and your mobile, this is because you have probably been spending the majority of your day staring at a screen typing away your essay, so it's nice to get away from electronic gadgets. It's important to let your mind rest so spend your break relaxing or chatting to a friend. Breaks are important but stick to a time and don't run over, if you allow yourself 15 minutes stick to it and ensure your back at your desk working as soon as it's up. Its easy to say "just five more minutes", but before you know it you'd of been away from your assignment for an hour, agreed to watch a movie with house mates and then see no point in going back to work.

Tip #7
Take your time.
A lot of people I know leave there assignments till less than a week before the deadline, then find themselves doing all-nighters in the library most days that week. I believe planning your time efficiently would get you the best results. I know some people work better under pressure, but personally working weeks in advance of deadlines allows me to stay relaxed and calm about the situation. Working with plenty of time ahead of me means my assignments aren't the only thing I have on my mind. I have time to hang out with friends and my boyfriend, time to go home and see my family, and also time to blog!

Tip #8
Meet with your marker.
Although we have sessions with module leaders that explain the assignment and what they expect from us, I always find it helpful to meet with the tutor who will be marking my assignment. They often have hints and tips that'll make your assignment stand out from others. Also different tutors will interpret marking criteria's in different ways, so marks may also be awarded differently. Meeting with the marker will also enable you to get clarification on your plan or a draft you have been working on, they will show you which parts of your plan may not be so important, and which parts are highly recommended that you include. Markers will also advise you on the most important parts of the assignment, where the most marks can be achieved, and they would like to see from you.

Tip #9
Read back through your assignment.
I always finish my assignment and then put it to one side for a few days and forget about it, then after 3-5 days I'll load it back up onto my computer in a quiet room where I can concentrate and read back through it with a fresh mind. This often helps me to pick out parts which sound like ramble, and allows me to make any amendments and changes. I find it useful to forget about it for a while as my mind can then clear and when I do my final read through it's with an open head. Reading back through often helps me pick up any grammar mistakes, and allows me to add punctuation to places where I've forgot (something I do far to often).

Tip #10
Get someone else to read through it.
I usually ask a few people to read through my assignment, my boyfriend Fred helps me with grammar and punctuation mistakes, he is good at picking out sentences that don't quite make sense, and missing commas that prevent anyone reading from taking a breath! I also get my cousin to read through it, she is academically amazing and helps me to amend certain words to make my assignment sound more intellectual. Its also a good idea to get course mates to read through your assignment, they have an idea of the topic already so can offer you advice on what they may have done differently.

So there it is, my top 10 assignment tips! Please feel free to comment and share, and let me know what you find helpful, the things that help you through, and the parts which you struggle with the most.

Fitness Diaries #1

I have recently, from no where, had a massive urge to get fit and healthy. I admit, I'm not overweight or in need of getting in shape as I have the figure of a stick, which some people would die for, however I'm super jealous of all those women out their with curves, but I am extremely unhealthy, my diet is crap and before now I've never exercised in my life. I've decided to make the change, from couch potato to exercise queen! Yet it might be sometime before I can class myself as any kind of pro.

Many people look to the gym to improve their health and fitness, however the gym is just not for me. I hate how people can watch me exercise and how I could be stuck in a room sweating and looking absolutely minging with people who I could potentially bump into again. On that note actually, why is it every other girl looks hot when working out except me? I get tangled greasie hair with a droopy ponytail a bright red face, and probably a fair few unwanted sweat patches in places where sweat patches just shouldn't belong. So yeah, the gym just isn't my cup of tea. Instead I've turned to running.

I've been running for about 3 weeks now, and trying to run around 3-4 times a week, which is quite easy at the moment as I'm on holiday from university and I've not yet started back on placement. When I am back on placement I'm not quite sure yet how I'm going to fit running into my life, maybe when I find a way I'll write a blog post on it! So watch this space!

Although I have only been running a few weeks I am already starting to see an improvement. At first I couldn't quite grasp the technique of breathing, I know that sounds daft because breathing is usually something we do without thinking but whilst running your body requires so much more oxygen it's important to have control over your breathing. Concentrating on breathing properly also helps me to continue running when all I want to do is give up, maybe I'll write a future blog post soon on my tips and tricks and what I find helpful!

I'm also finding I can run a lot longer without becoming as out of breath, and my legs are begining to feel a lot less weak than what they used to feel after a run. I've not as yet set myself any goals as in races to take part in or distances to aim for, however I do have small running goals including sticking with it, I'm hopeless at committing to a hobby, but running is one I really enjoy so hopefully this one will be different. A second mini goal includes being able to run around the whole of the park I have been going to in one go without stopping. So far I can get half way round before needing a break, so I'll definitely keep you updated on how that goal is going.

I'm quite pleased at how my fitness has already begun to improve and how much I'm enjoying getting out in the early morning sun for a run! I am also happy I have found a form of exercise that I enjoy and how proud I feel after completing a distance further than last time. I believe there's a form of exercise out their for everyone, and would love to hear from other new runners, or even those who have been running a long time. Leave me a comment on what you find helpful whilst running and what you find most difficult.

Much love, El x

Countryside Adventures

I absolutely love adventures to the countryside. I'm originally from Manchester, which most will know has absolute zero grass, greenery, or general countryside, therefore since moving to Sheffield I have found my love for the outdoors. Today I went exploring with Fred, we found the most beautifulest of views that I just have to share with you guys, we adventured out with a rucksack full of treats, the weather was beautiful, sun shining and sky blue. It was lovely and the most perfect day for a picnic. Although I've lived in Sheffield for almost 2 years now, there are still many place's I've never been, each time we decide to go exploring we come across new beautiful and wonderful places. Today we discovered a field of horses not far from where I live, some baby lambs which wouldn't stop yelping, (absolutely super cute), and so much open space where we enjoyed lunch sat in the beaming sun.

The lambs we spotted today were just the definition of spring, leaping and bouncy across the field chasing and playing with one another. I adore all animals, especially baby ones, so when I spotted theses along our adventure today I just had to stop and snap a few. The best part was that a public footpath lead directly through the center of the field they were in, therefore I had the perfect opportunity to picture them!

Another favorite of mine are horses, my ultimate dream would be to own one! So when we came across a field where we could casually walk through and pet the horses that were grazing there, I just couldn't help myself. They were gorgeous and super friendly.

Today was a beautiful day, and a lovely taster of the weather that is yet to come. Spring is well on its way and in my eye's everyone should make the most of it, we never have an absolute perfect summer, there's always a chance of rain and cloud, therefore I am now vowing to appreciate every warm day here in the UK, and make the most of it by doing small things I love, long walks, beautiful views, and of course searching for baby animals, or any animals for that matter!

Last Weeks Visit To The Peaks

The Peak District is one of my all time favorite place's to visit, especially when the weathers good, which here in the north of the UK is extremely rare. I am also very lucky to live right near them in Sheffield. Since moving to Sheffield for university two years ago I have visited on many occasions, and each time I love discovering a new part of them. The peaks are so big every time I go I get to see and explore a whole new area. When I woke up last Tuesday and the sun was beaming through my window, I woke up my boyfriend and told him we must make the most of it. We packed up my car with snacks and water and headed towards the glorious peaks. We'd once visit a part of the peak district called Derwant Valley, last summer, it was so beautiful we thought we'd visit again. When arriving at Derwant Valley, it was my brilliant idea to rent bikes and cycle round the glorious lake, to my horror we was told the cycle track around the valley was 12 miles long, I was so tempted to change my mind and turn around! For me, someone extremely unfit, who never exercises and promises each week to start becoming more active, even a 5 mile cycle would be too much, nevertheless Fred persuaded me to continue and so I did. All 12 miles.

Although it was a struggle, and at time I really did not think I would make it to the end, even thought someone would have to come and rescue me, I made it, and I was bloody chuffed when it was over. It was to be fair an absolute gorgeous day, and it has since pushed me to become more outdoorsy. Even if I did ache for 3 whole days after, it was worth it, worth the sore legs and the bruised bum from such a horrible hard bike seat, the views were incredible and I would highly recommend a visit.
